Year 5 pupils preparing for their 11+ exams in the hope of securing a place in a grammar school inevitably use books produced by one of the major publishers, such as Bond, CGP, Collins or Letts.
We would recommend every parent use one or more of these books alongside regular tuition. These books can be used to gauge the correct level pupils should be learning at. And in the case of NVR, it exposes pupils to lots of NVR questions, which is essential as a large part of NVR is about recognising patterns, and the pupils that have been exposed to lots of shapes tend to recognise patterns quickly. In recent years, many publishers started to provide digital access to their books. Some publishers provide basic PDF files, whilst others provide a more interactive interface. Having digital access is particularly helpful for parents who may need to travel, but still want to keep the 11 plus learning momentum going.
Below is an overview of some of the main 11 plus resources available on the market.
1. CGP (Coordination Group Publications)
The CGP collection is suitable for parents seeking budget-friendly, straightforward practice. The 11+ Maths/English Practice Books with assessment retail for between £6.50 – £8.99, whilst the 11+ GL 10-Minute Tests sell for around £6.50 – £7.99.
Pros:
✅ Clear, concise explanations – great for quick learning.
✅ Includes full answer keys – helps with self-marking.
✅Kindle-friendly formatting – easy to read on tablets.
✅ Affordable – cheaper than print versions in some cases.
Cons:
❌ No interactive features – just a PDF-style e-book.
2. Bond 11+ (Oxford University Press)
For parents seeking structured, exam-style practice, the Bond books are a good option. The Bond 11+ Assessment Papers retail for around £7.99 – £9.99, whilst the Bond 11+ 10-Minute Tests retail for around £6.99 – £8.99. Although these titles are great, I would caution against becoming reliant on the 10 minute tests. These are really popular amongst parents, but the problem is when pupils become overly comfortable with the 10 minute tests, they sometimes struggle to sit longer exams, which require longer stretches of attention.
Pros:
✅ Trusted brand – used by many grammar schools.
✅ Available on multiple platforms (Kindle, Google, Apple).
✅Progressive difficulty – good for skill-building.
Cons:
❌ Some formatting issues – tables/images can appear small on e-readers.
❌ Slightly pricier than CGP.
3. Collins 11+ Complete Revision & Practice
The Collins series are good for students who prefer a single comprehensive guide. The 11+ Maths/English Complete Revision retails for around £8.99 – £10.99.
Pros:
✅ All-in-one guide – covers theory and practice.
✅ Good for CEM & GL exam boards.
Cons:
❌ Bulky for e-readers – better suited to tablets.
❌ Fewer subject-specific books compared to CGP/Bond.
4. RSL Educational
I’m also including one that is not very well known: RSL. Most parents tend to stick to the well-known brands, and understandably so. We took a chance on the RSL offering and found it to be very good. The RSL line of resources is best for students aiming for highly competitive grammar schools.
The digital resources are available as PDFs (direct from the website). Titles include RSL 11+ Practice Papers, which sells for around £10 – £15 per pack.
Pros:
✅ Challenging, realistic questions – great for high-ability students.
✅ Instant download – no waiting for delivery.
Cons:
❌ Expensive for PDFs – no physical copy included.
❌ Limited subject range (mostly Maths & English).
